Do you know what you pay for Netflix? Of course - €7.99 per month. And Spotify? €10.99. And your monthly transport pass?
Now tell me: how much are you paying in taxes and Social Security this month?
If you couldn’t answer straight away, you’re not alone. Maria, a graphic designer in Lisbon, realised this when a client asked: “How much does it come to with VAT?” She froze. She had no idea. She spent the whole afternoon on the Finance Portal trying to figure it out.
The Perfect Analogy for 2026
We live in the age of subscriptions. You pay a monthly amount and stop thinking about it. What if taxes worked the same way?
Taxes and Social Security are your “subscription” for working legally in Portugal. Just as you pay for a transport pass to use public transport, you pay taxes to:
- Have a pension one day (Social Security)
- Use the NHS when you need it
- Work legally with invoices and green receipts
- Have the right to unemployment benefit
The difference? Netflix debits automatically. Taxes, not yet - but that’s changing.
How Much Does the “Freelancer Subscription” Cost?
João works as a copywriter and invoices €1,500 per month. How much is his “subscription”?
Note: In your first year as an independent worker, you get automatic Social Security exemption. The “subscription” is much cheaper during those first 12 months.
The Problem With Manual Subscriptions
Netflix never emails you saying “this month you need to log in and pay manually.” It simply debits and that’s it.
But that’s exactly what taxes require. Sofia, a photographer in Porto, learnt this the hard way. In April she was extremely busy with weddings and forgot about the quarterly VAT declaration. Result: a fine.
“But I don’t even charge VAT!” she protested. Doesn’t matter - the declaration still needs to be submitted, even if it’s nil.
The obligations you must meet regularly:
- Quarterly VAT declaration - every 3 months, even when nil
- Quarterly Social Security declaration - every 3 months
- Annual IRS declaration - once a year (between April and June)
Miss one and you get a fine. And VAT fines can be painful.
The Mindset Shift
Bruno, a freelance programmer, resisted automation tools for years. “I’m in IT, I obviously know how to use the Finance Portal!”
Until the day he forgot a quarterly declaration while deep in a big project. The fine hurt more than his pride.
“It’s like having GitHub Actions for taxes,” he jokes now. “You set it up once and it just works. I should have done this from the start.”
In Summary
-
Taxes are your “subscription” for working legally - Social Security for your pension, IRS for public services. At €1,500/month invoicing, expect to pay €350-420/month (after year one).
-
The current system is manual and demands attention - you must submit quarterly VAT and Social Security declarations every 3 months, even when nil. Forgetting is expensive.
-
Automation is the obvious solution - with FIZ (Auto Pro plan), quarterly declarations are submitted automatically. Pay and forget - as it should be.
