As a self-employed worker, you live between two portals: the Portal das Finanças, for VAT and IRS, and Segurança Social Direta, for contributions. Two portals, two passwords - and both always forgotten at the worst moment.
It feels as if forever recovering passwords is just part of freelance life. But in fact there’s a single key that opens both, and the rest of the State on top.
What the Chave Móvel Digital is
The Chave Móvel Digital (CMD) is the Portuguese State’s single login. Instead of a different password for each portal, you always identify yourself the same way - with your phone - at autenticacao.gov.pt.
With the same CMD you get into the Portal das Finanças, Segurança Social Direta, SNS 24, ePortugal and the large majority of public services. One key, many doors.
And there’s a bonus for the self-employed: the CMD also lets you sign documents digitally at a distance, with legal validity - handy for contracts and declarations that used to need a printer and a pen.
How to activate it
Activation is a one-off. The fastest route is the gov.pt app on your phone - and, for that method, you need a valid Citizen Card and a phone with a camera. In the app, you choose “Ativar Chave Móvel Digital” and follow the steps:
- Enter the mobile number that will be tied to the key.
- Receive a code by SMS and enter it.
- Read the Citizen Card with your phone - front and back, as the on-screen instructions say.
- Confirm the postal code of the card’s address.
- Do a facial verification to prove it’s you.
Once it’s active, you log in like this: enter your mobile number and the PIN you set, then confirm with a temporary security code sent by SMS.
If you’d rather not do it alone, you can activate it by video call (when available - this channel is sometimes temporarily suspended, so check the current status on autenticacao.gov.pt) or at an authorised counter - for example a Loja or Espaço Cidadão, a registry office (IRN) or a consulate (see the list of locations on gov.pt). There, a foreigner can identify themselves with a passport or residence permit, without a Citizen Card. There’s also phone support (210 489 010 or 300 003 990).
Beatriz’s case
Beatriz, a freelance illustrator in Lisbon, used to lose hours every quarter recovering the tax office or Social Security password - she never remembered either.
She activated the Chave Móvel Digital one afternoon. Since then she logs into both portals with her phone, without juggling several passwords - just the key’s PIN. When one of them asks for the old password, she simply picks “log in with Chave Móvel Digital” and sidesteps the problem.
Rui’s case
Rui wanted to activate the CMD, but his Citizen Card had expired - and without a valid card the activation won’t go through.
He renewed the Citizen Card first and only then activated the key. The lesson: check your Citizen Card is still valid before you start, or you’ll get stuck halfway.
Careful: the Chave Móvel Digital doesn’t replace your Portal or Social Security password - it sits alongside it, as an alternative way in. That’s exactly why it solves the problem: if you forget one portal’s password, you still get in via the CMD, and then reset the password inside at your leisure.
Where FIZ comes in
The Chave Móvel Digital removes the friction of getting into the portals. FIZ removes the reason to go in so often: invoices are certified and the quarterly VAT and Social Security returns are calculated and filed automatically. Together, the two stop the State from being a daily obstacle.
In summary
- The Chave Móvel Digital is the same login for the Portal das Finanças, Segurança Social Direta and the rest of the public services - one key instead of several passwords.
- It’s activated once: via the gov.pt app (with a Citizen Card and a phone with a camera), by video call or at a desk - where a foreigner can use a passport or residence permit.
- It’s the instant route to recover tax office access and Segurança Social Direta without waiting for letters.
